(Ahhhhh I can do this I can do this I think I can do this??)

Hello, creator! I hope you enjoy the exchange, and I'm really excited to see your art or read your fic. <3

I like friendship, chosen family, romance, adventure, wacky hijinx, ridiculous AUs, character studies, backstory, fannish tropes, and people being kind to each other and themselves. I'm thrilled with slice of life vignettes and big ambitious plots.

I'm very happy with any rating and any kind of romantic/sexual/kink content -- or none -- whatever you most like to write. My two general requests would be a happy ending, and nothing where any of the characters are too drunk to know what they're doing.

Testing imzy crossposting

So a new platform called Imzy has sprung up and is maybe a new fannish hub? I don't have particularly strong feelings about it, especially given that I'm perfectly happy on dreamwidth, but it does have a better framework for discussion than twitter or tumblr so if fandom wants to hang out there then I'm game.

I'm testing a feature whereby allegedly it will post to my blog there from my DW RSS feed (thanks to [personal profile] morgandawn for the tip).

If you want to check it out, you can request an invite from me here. I've got 50, so don't be shy.

eta: it crossposts a link to this post but not the body.

ugh, writing is hard
default [trufflehog]
such_heights
I read this blog post by Emma Newman today: When just write is not enough, which talks about how fear and anxiety can stop you from creating.

Ah, I thought. That sounds about right. At some point a few years ago, writing went from fun to scary. I'm scared that if I write something and post it, people who I like and admire will secretly think it's not very good and judge me accordingly. I don't even know, brains are terrible, I'm pretty sure that all my friends don't secretly think I'm a horrible writer and think less of me as a person. Oddly, this doesn't seem to affect my vidding at all, just fiction.

So that's been a helpful realisation today! How I go from here to actually writing again I'm not sure, but it's a good step. (A couple of wonderfully kind comments recently on the AO3 have certainly helped too, and if anyone felt moved to tell me something they like about something I've written, it would not go amiss.)

HAMILTON

HAMILCON

In September, we fell in love with the cast album. In October, we bought tickets. 'Will we be sick of it by the end of June? Probably not.'

June rolls around, and no, not even a little. I went with [personal profile] happydork, [personal profile] purplefringe, [personal profile] raven, [personal profile] shinyjenni, [profile] twistedsoup and [personal profile] andrew, on the same night as [personal profile] oliviacirce, [personal profile] aria, [personal profile] starlady, [personal profile] were_duck, [personal profile] laceblade &c, which meant we got to all have slightly dazed dinner together beforehand, which was amazing.

By an astonishing twist of luck, the day we went was the day they were filming it, for archival and hopefully eventually distribution purposes (no one knows when the latter might be). So we had the entire original cast, even Jonathan Groff returning as King George for one night only and clearly having the time of his life. I was entirely ready to be excited about seeing different interpretations from understudies or new cast members, but that was pretty special.

Brief Notes on 'That Meta'
default [trufflehog]
such_heights
There's been a lot of conversation over the past few days in various parts of fandom over this 16k meta (AO3 registered users only) by Franzeska. It's a long, racist piece of nonsense with the summary Bullying and the Co-opting of Social Justice Activism in Fandom: A discussion of bias in fannish meta, m/m vs. other pairings, shipping of POC, vidding characters of color, what it means to ship, and problems in Stormpilot fandom. I don't recommend reading it, but it has sparked some good conversations.

As an aside, reading through the comments on my phone proved to be hazardous as I landed on the kudos button by mistake, which has been quite embarrassing over the last two days. Totally an accident, I do not like that post and I would un-kudos it if I could. /o\

In better news, in spite of his Conservative opponent's bigoted and underhand smear campaign tactics, Sadiq Khan looks set to be London's next mayor. He's a human rights lawyer, the most prominent Muslim politician we've had in the UK to date, and the son of working class Pakistani immigrants. He's a social democrat with policies on affordable housing, air pollution and transport fare freezes. I am hopeful that he can do good things for my city.

Vidukon Show - rec me vids from 2006
default [trufflehog]
such_heights
For this year's Vidukon I'm putting together a show of vids that were made/premiered in 2006. I'm going through Vividcon from that year and people's journal archives, and it's a very fun nostalgia fest. Harry Potter was an ongoing series, it was the early days of SGA, BSG, SPN and all other three letter acronym shows, people were vidding a lot of Farscape and due South and Whedonverse, and Doctor Who was just beginning to pick up interest.

I'd love recs of any personal faves from that year. Must have been originally posted that year, so no remasters etc, but otherwise anything goes. Self recs very much encouraged! I know it might feel a bit weird to look at work a decade old, but I'm really interested to see how much vidding has changed in style and content over the years, and how much it hasn't.

Festivids Reveal!
default [trufflehog]
such_heights
Festivids reveals are up! Thank you SO much to [personal profile] purplefringe for Gonna Get Through This World (An Adventure in Space and Time) and [personal profile] heresluck for Independent Women (Hamilton).

I made two vids this year! Less than I'd originally been planning, but I did end up making two other vids during the festivids period, so what can you do.

Comedy Tragedy History (Hamilton, for [profile] gwenfrankstein)
I'd been working on a Hamilton vid since before assignments went out, intending to use it as a treat, but happy days, I got assigned to [profile] gwenfrankenstein who wanted a Hamilton vid! I ended up ditching my first project and switching it out for the amazing Akala song, 'Comedy Tragedy History'. Genius has a good breakdown of the lyrics.

I worked so hard on this vid! I found it challenging in a great way - I had to cut a lot faster than I do usually, work with a bunch of different kinds of source, and work with really brilliant, intricate, quick lyrics. I think I just about did the idea justice, and I'm so proud of the end result, I think I levelled up a little as a vidder through making it.

You're My Best Friend (RPF - Ian McKellen/Patrick Stewart, for [personal profile] purplefringe)
For once, I thought I was getting one up on [personal profile] purplefringe! She's made me treats the last couple of years, but this year I would surprise her and get one up! ... so obviously this is the year I was her assignment, ha. Still, this was a delight to make, a goofy vid about best friends for my best friend. I'm glad other people enjoyed it too.

It was fun to work with non-standard source for both vids this year, with lots of scouring youtube and working with photos. Thank you, everyone who left kind comments during the anon period, they mean a lot! <3
