Well, two years after I started this thing, think I'm finally ready to post it. Here goes!

The Aetherion
Doctor Who ; PG-13 ; Amy/Rory, Eleven/River ; 45k
After the Doctor is kidnapped, Amy, Rory and River embark on a long journey to find the only thing that can save him - a mysterious artefact called the Aetherion.

Content notes: deals with depression and recovery from trauma.

Many thanks to [personal profile] purplefringe for a heroic amount of handholding, and to [personal profile] pocketmouse for the beta.

One Of My Hobbies: companions and life outside the Doctor

So there's an interesting post on tumblr from [tumblr.com profile] taiey pointing out just how many of Clara's episodes feature her home/work life as well as her adventures with the Doctor - she tallies it as 75% up to last week's episode. That seems pretty high! And then I was curious what it looked like for other companions, as well as the time periods spent travelling full time in the TARDIS versus coming along for visits etc.

Note - I don't think that this is a way of working out how feminist or well-rounded a companion's arc is, but given that I have genuinely seen people say that Clara's life revolves around the Doctor (she is the only regular New Who companion to travel in the TARDIS part time throughout her run! why would you say that?! jeez, fandom) it seemed interesting to bear in mind.

in chronological orderCollapse )

I feel like a lot of the lazier Doctor Who reviews out there like to ignore the actual information we have on screen in favour of comments like 'all Martha ever did was pine after the Doctor' or 'Clara has no personality and we don't know anything about her life'. I'm really bored of that crap. You can take issue with their storylines without ragging on the women themselves, it's not hard.

Daily Happiness

Got tagged for a meme where you post three happy things a day for five days. Let's do it!

+ Ah, Sunday. Laundry on, drinking coffee, deciding whether I want to vid or play some Mass Effect. Later I will watch Doctor Who. :D

+ We have finally got around to watching Sleepy Hollow as a household. It's so delightful, as you all said ages back. We will be watching the finale tonight, I am very excited. It is so refreshing to watch a show, especially a show in this particular genre and based on this particular story, in which they have their one token white dude and then the rest of the world of the show is absolutely stuffed full with women and people of colour and people with disabilities and sometimes people who are all of the above (Macey's the best), and it does my heart good. I love all of the dynamics between Ichabod and Abbie and Jenny and Frank, and Ichabod vs. the 21st century is my favourite thing.

+ Off on holiday in two weeks, yayyy! [personal profile] happydork and I are going to go and lie on a beach in Spain for a week and do as little as humanly possible, it's going to be amazing.

What I would like to do while I'm there is do lots of reading! I just read and adored Ancillary Justice and have suddenly remembered that I like reading things that aren't fanfic sometimes. I would love some book recs! Looking for recent-ish stuff that is some or all of the following:

- scifi/fantasy/speculative
- has interesting, prominent female characters
- generally set in a world with a diverse population rather than just all straight white people all the time
- anything with robots or f/f romance
- available as an ebook is a bonus
- dislikes: bleakness, dead queers, graphic violence, noncon, zombies
